Nursing Shortage – Is Now the Right Time For You to Try Travel Nursing?

The nursing shortage has everyone talking. Nurses, doctors, hospitals and everyone who relies on their expertise. Just what is to be done.

Most facilities have been relying on travel nurses for years. It is the perfect solution for so many hospitals. They receive a well qualified nurse just when they need them most. They are able to have them on the schedule and working in a short period of time.

In this economy is travel nursing still a good option? For many it is. You really need to sit down and ask yourself some important questions.

• Are you comfortable hitting the ground running? Orientation is minimal, if at all. You really need to be well versed in your specialty.
• Are you willing to travel where needed? In recent years, it was much easier to write your own ticket. You could pretty much travel where and when you wanted. You may now need to be more flexible with your travel destinations.
• Are you willing to travel to a new location every thirteen weeks? Many times you are able to renew an assignment after the initial thirteen weeks is done. It’s not always possible, you may find yourself in a new locale frequently. This is usually considered a positive by most nurses. If it isn’t for you, be sure to be honest with yourself.

Some hospitals are cutting back on their travel nursing budgets, even with the nursing shortage. But, you are still in high demand. Travel nursing can easily become a career choice, rather than a short term decision. There are nurses who have been doing it successfully for years and that isn’t expected to change anytime soon.
